New to me: Broccoli salad
I stole this pic. Who knew a discount party supply page would have such great recipes?
I know it feels like Summer’s over, but I’m gonna stretch a little and call this a Transitional salad. It’s got bacon in it. That’s my criteria on that one.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Last weekend we went to a potluck at my friend Becky’s house after they had their honey sale. They are fast becoming honey moguls but that another story for another time. What I love about her potlucks is that you always meet new folks and this one was no different. One of her friends brought this dish that, according to Discount Party Supplies, makes all the potluck rounds, but I don’t think I’ve ever had it. I was gushing on and on about it so the nice party guest gave me the recipe on the spot:
2 large heads broccoli, chopped small
1 small red onion, halved and finely chopped
1/2 cup raisins
1/3 cup sunflower seeds
Salt and pepper, to taste
10 slices bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled
3/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons white vinegar
recipe calls for sugar but use whatever sweetener you find appropriate, or none.
I think the directions are pretty much chop and mix. I can handle that.
I’m not normally a fan of raw broccoli, but I think the bacon trumps everything. Think of all the variations! I can’t wait to try a bunch of different ingredients as we, ahem, move into Autumn.
Have you had this salad before? What ingredients would you add or take away?

I have a vegan variation of this in the book. One of my faves for sure!
I LOVE broccoli salad! Try adding some craisins/raisins and chopped apple. Even better.
Oh, yes! Love this salad. I now enjoy it without the bacon just as much as I enjoyed it with when I still ate meat. But if I ever find a soy bacon bit thing I can actually eat – I would love to try it with those. I think it is the sweet and tangy dressing that does it for me – a perfect accompaniment to the broccoli!
Broccoli salad is awesome. I’ve made it before but without bacon. I think the bacon is such an awesome addition. I’m going to use that next time because you are right that bacon trumps everything!
never had this specifically, but it does look good
I’d have to take out the mayo. i think i’d add drizzle tahini or add some hummus to replace the mayo.
yeah-craisins would be good, too!
Very pretty. Without the bacon this salad has potential!
I’ve had broccoli salad and it is good. Broccoli is one of my favorite veggies so it’s really hard to go wrong with it. I would leave out the raisins and add some sort of cheese:)
Broccoli salad is awesome! Reading this post is making me want to make a broccoli salad tonight! But I think I will leave off the bacon and add some apple instead!
