I’m a lucky girl…

Posted in Health, Just sayin' on March 25th, 2010 by tiff – 5 Comments

Guess who’s coming to Disneyworld with me?
How did I get so lucky? Because I won my VERY FIRST GIVEAWAY!!!!!!

(*applause * and balloons falling from the ceiling)

Okay, that was only 7 months’ worth of entering contests, but I hit the mother lode! Me and Jorge’s random number generator picked ME, and set me up with all the Jay Robb  protein powder I need for my Disney trip! Plus a rockin’ tank top that, yes, I will model for you. At Disney? Well, we’ll see about that!

I know some of you win alllll the time (you know who you are, yoga goddess), but I’m pretty darn excited! 7 months of blogging to receive one giveaway prize and one product sample. Whoohoo!

Of course, I’ve also gained lots of friends along the way, and isn’t that what it’s really all about? *big cheesy grin*

In other news, I’ve lost 8 lbs since the beginning of the year which is actually good progress for me. Slow, but steady. I’ve had to give away four of my favorite pairs of pants! If it weren’t for seeing/feeling my pants feeling too big (way too big), I’m not sure I’d be able to tell I’d lost anything. I feel pretty much the same – I feel good, but the same size.

I have not been getting a whole lot of exercise in since my back’s been out of whack. I’ve spent my week off of my Sustainable Biz program going to the chiropractor, getting a massage, and seeing my Reiki lady (I’ll do a post on her soon. She’s amazing).

I don’t follow Jorge’s meal plan exactly, but my meals lately have been my Sugar-free breakfast shake, nuts or string cheese for snacks, a wrap for lunch (ie Chicken, hummus, spinach, pesto or similar combination), and something for dinner like a Pita Pizza or veggies with protein or whole wheat pasta/brown rice (2x week-ish) with a protein. For dessert, I have a square of dark chocolate, a sugar-free chocolate, or both. :)

The other night, I tried to make coconut kefir/acai fro-yo, and it wasn’t pretty. I’ll work on that and get back to you. Stay tuned for a super exciting report from Portland!

A blog award…now with more HAPPY!

Posted in Shameless plug on March 23rd, 2010 by tiff – 7 Comments
Here’s how it works:

1. When you have received this award please thank the person who gave it to you in a new post.
2.  Name 10 things that make you happy.
3.  Pass the award onto ten other bloggers and inform the winners.

Thank you, Maurie, for bestowing this award upon me, and for joining us at the Seattle Tilth Early Plant sale…seriously, Chris and I are more than a bit plant ignorant. Our garden’s gonna rock now, and we’ll have more veggies than we’ll know what to do with! Here we are stopping to smell the blossoms after coffee and a birding walk. Hooray for spring!
Here are ten things that make me happy (in order of sentence length):
1. Mojitos!
2. An empty kitchen sink.
3. Our pets – Derby, Cady & Mia.
4. My husband’s sense of humor.
5. Sinking my toes into warm sand.
6. My blog/Twitter/Facebook/real life friends.
7. Connecting people, whether it’s for work, life, or love.
8. Finding time for myself: massage, yoga, or just reading the latest Sunset magazine.
9. Healthy, guilty snacks like baked cheese puffs (though today’s treat was Smoked Gouda Popcorn!).
10. Learning something new and having my thinking changed, my mind opened to new possibilities and ideas.
It’s always so hard to pass these along, and though no one is obligated to do it, I’d like to recognize the following bloggers who I enjoy reading, besides my regular peeps who may have already received this a thousand times over:
and last, but not least, Fed Up With School Lunch, because I think her project is so brave and important in this time of increased childhood obesity.

Of course, if Averie, Heather, Janetha, Katie, Sarah or Deb really wants to run away with the award, they are more than welcome to. :)

New stuff…

I could not come up with a better title this morning. I’m hungry and have a bit of a headache. Um, I may have had a little too much wine at an auction last night…

I survived my first quarter of my Sustainable Biz grad program and have one week off before delving into Social Justice for 10 weeks. Here’s a mish mash post of what else has been going on and what I’ve been eating.

You’ll be happy to know I’ve perfected pancakes:and made a Trader Joe’s run where I was a mad label-reading fool! This was pretty good. The chips got a little hard on the edges but definitely satisfied any Mexican food cravings:My new all-time favorite seasoning found at our local market:It’s sooooo good and does not contain MSG! My food has flavor again! Hooray! Thank you Mrs. G (seriously, you kick Mrs. Dash’s ass!).

And I did some shopping for myself last weekend. I haven’t bought Origins in a long time, but I wanted to try their new fruit acid peel pads that I’ve seen advertised in recent mags:As I told Chris when we left, “She would have gotten a much bigger sale if she had gasped audibly and protested a little when I told her that I was over 40.” Yeah, I just didn’t think the salesgirl’s reaction was BIG enough. Apparently, I look over 40. *sigh*

That’s all for now. I’m off to make this weekend’s pancakes. Next post, Seattle Tilth sale recap and a nice walk with friends (and fellow blogger).

Eating on vacation …

Posted in Out and about on March 18th, 2010 by tiff – 5 Comments

I’m going on vacation soon. Here’s a hint:If you weren’t completely assured of my dorkiness up to this point, any further information regarding such vacations will confirm it. I grew up visiting Disneyland, but I didn’t go to DisneyWORLD until our honeymoon, at the age of  *cough* 37.

Aside to say that all during my wedding planning, everyone kept asking me “This is your first wedding? Are you sure?” Yeah, I think I would remember having been married before. I was picky. What can I say?

And, fine, no one had ever asked me to marry them. Happy now?

Anyway, after our honeymoon, one thing lead to another and soon we owned a Disney timeshare and, as luck would have it, a few years later Chris got a job with ESPN which is owned by, you guessed it, Disney.*

Soon we’ll be taking our seventh trip in seven years. Originally, we just made reservations for our siblings and were going to sit this one out, but then we found out our niece and nephews were moving out of the country so we decided to see them in Florida before they left.

Cut to the important part**…..eating at Disneyworld! I’ve decided to stay low carb, low sugar on this trip (that’s a toughie – Mickey Bars and Mickey Rice Krispie Treats will have to be ignored).

My love of these knows no bounds. Photo courtesy of knewton64.

Just for kicks and giggles, I’ve also decided to only eat seafood though WDW probably has some of the best beef in the country. If there’s no good seafood option (I don’t eat clams, scallops, mussels or oysters), then I will probably stick with vegetarian options (there is always at least one on EVERY Disney menu) unless I feel really protein-deprived (you do walk an average of 10 miles a day).

So that’s what’s coming up for Carbzilla. I do plan on packing treats and breakfast smoothie makings (plus we’ll make a grocery run for freshies). And, of course, I’ll be blogging! Any other helpful, eating-on-vacation ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What’s cool is I can see all the Disney menus ahead of time here. Makes menu planning lots of fun (warning: don’t read if you’re slightly hungry at all or soon you’ll be taking bites out of your monitor)!

*The significance of this is that we now get ourselves and our guests into the parks for free. Cuts the vacation spending at least in half, plus we get other great discounts on food and merchandise.

** Thus skipping my Excel Daily Park Calendars and Disney Packing List ramblings.
